DIY Hormone Safe Multi-Purpose Cleaner

Many commercial cleaning products contain harmful chemicals known as endocrine disruptors. But what exactly are endocrine disruptors?

Endocrine Disruptors 101

The endocrine system plays a vital role in regulating hormones that control various bodily functions. Endocrine disruptors are substances that interfere with this delicate system, often mimicking or blocking the body's natural hormones. Prolonged exposure to these disruptors can lead to a range of health issues, including reproductive problems, developmental delays, and even certain cancers.

Unfortunately, most conventional cleaners are riddled with endocrine disruptors. Common ingredients such as phthalates, parabens, and synthetic fragrances are known to disrupt hormonal balance. These chemicals can be absorbed through the skin, inhaled, or ingested, posing a continuous threat to our well-being. A simple swap you can make today is in crafting your own all-purpose cleaner.

Ingredients:

  1. Baking Soda

  2. Vinegar

  3. Essential Oils (e.g., lavender, tea tree, eucalyptus)

  4. Water

Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of water with 1 cup of white vinegar.

  2. Slowly add 2 tablespoons of baking soda while stirring to avoid excessive fizzing.

  3. Once the fizzing subsides, add 10-15 drops of your chosen essential oils for a pleasant scent and added antimicrobial properties. (We use eucalyptus + lavender)

  4. Mix well and transfer the solution into a spray bottle.

This non-toxic cleaner is not only effective in cleaning various surfaces but also safe for your health and the environment. One of the perks of making your own cleaner is the ability to customize the scent. Miranda Kerr (of Victoria’s Secret Angel fame and KORA Organics) prefers just eucalyptus while some of our fav combos are:

  1. MARGO’S OG:

    • 10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil

    • 8 drops of lavender essential oil

  2. Citrus Burst:

    • 10 drops of lemon essential oil

    • 5 drops of orange essential oil

  3. Fresh Meadows:

    • 8 drops of lavender essential oil

    • 7 drops of chamomile essential oil

  4. Eucalyptus Zen:

    • 12 drops of eucalyptus essential oil

    • 3 drops of peppermint essential oil

Experiment with different essential oil combinations until you find the perfect scent. When looking to prioritize your hormone health it’s essential to be vigilant about the products you use. Swapping for homemade alternatives puts the power in your hands, knowing exactly what goes into what you’re using.
