Turmeric is a distinct spice that adds a welcomed warming addition to any dish or drink its in. Besides its culinary value, turmeric has benefits for the body and brain. Curcumin, the most potent and active compound in turmeric, has proven powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
But please don't start adding turmeric to everything. Curcumin is not well absorbed into the blood stream. To activate the effects of this herb completely, consume it with two ingredients.
Curcumin is fat soluble, which means it breaks down and dissolves in fat or oil. If you’re taking curcumin as a supplement its best to consume with a meal or beverage high in fat, like milk. Additionally, curcumin pairs well with black pepper which contain piperine. Piperine enhances the absorption of curcumin by 2,000% (PubMed.Gov, 1998).
Try this warming golden milk recipe that amps up absorption. I’ve been drinking McKel’s version and thought to share:
Nutrition Stripped’s Turmeric Milk
This Recipe Serves 2
2 cups of almond milk (homemade is preferred)
1 tablespoon honey, optional
1 tablespoon coconut oil, optional
1 teaspoon ground turmeric
1 cinnamon stick or 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
small pinch of black pepper and fresh grated ginger
Directions:
Pour all ingredients into a small saucepan and bring to a light boil. Whisk to combine ingredients. Reduce heat to low and simmer for up to 10 minutes.
Strain the milk if you have large pieces of ginger, cinnamon, peppercorns, etc. To serve, add honey or a dash of cinnamon.
Drink warm!
