1. Exfoliate
The skin on the lips is like any other skin on the body, but thinner. Thus it’s important to take its health serious. Exfoliate your lips no more than 2x a week and always stop if it’s irritating (you’ll know if your lips burn or sting.) Use a designated lip scrub as they are designed for this sensitive area. Buff the lips with your finger for a minute or two. It can be meditative so make sure not to over do it. Swipe off with a wet towel. Follow with your lip moisturizer.
2. Moisturize
With so many to choose from, picking the perfect lip moisturizer can be challenging. Your goal is to find the perfect balance of emollients that add moisture and occlusives to seal it in. Look for lip butters or balms made with plant based waxes, oils, and butters. Some heavenly ingredients include castor oil, bees wax, or shea butters. Check out emollients like squalene and triglycerides. These help heal already dried and cracked lips. For ultimate moisture opt for anything with vitamin E, hyaluronic acid or lanolin. Keep balms and butters near by and a lip mask by your bed to put on before you sleep.
3. Hydrate
Internal dehydration shows externally. While you’ll still need to rehab with lip scrubs and moisture masks, do your part by staying hydrated. Make sure to use a straw to help lips refrain from drying out faster. Besides to drinking (and eating) enough water, start to use a hydrasol spray. This will keep your skin hydrated and balanced. You can even keep them on hand to add a layer of moisture when needed. Consider investing in a good quality, hygienic humidifier. Keep this running in the home or at night to add moisture to the air and keep the skin barrier well moisturized. You'll notice a difference in more than your lips.
