How to Really Love Yourself
Self love is an essential aspect to genuine happiness. While a simple concept, it’s not always easy to accomplish. It seems as though once we’ve captured a feeling of internal peace, life’s hiccups get in the way. In fact, that’s the challenge and beauty of what self love entails. Regardless of complications-you can and are able to love yourself through it. Here are three ways to encourage adoration whatever stage you’re in.
Focus on Yourself
As hard as it might be, stop the pattern of comparing yourself to others. Each person shows up with a different story-no better or worse than anyone else’s. Often, we see just the tip of the iceberg. When our mind starts to compare ourselves to others, we forget the reality that we all have a different starting line. Focus on your path and placing one foot in front of the other today. When this becomes challenging gratitude is a useful tool to bring you back. List a few things you’re grateful for and see how your attitude changes.
Positive Self Talk
Positive self talk is an important aspect of self love since we are scientifically proven to focus more on the negative than positive. Combat a predisposition to negative thinking by stopping negativity in its tracks. A simple phrase like “I’m not going there” or “I’m going to focus on something else” can trigger your mind to reroute. Give yourself credit and recognition for all the hard work you put in.
Appreciate Compliments
It’s hard to accept compliments for what they are: honest observations made by others said to make you feel good. Often times we deflect compliments or deny the truth. If you are struggling with this, a simple “thank you” works great! If you would like to flex your conversational muscle, use it as a jumping off point for a positive conversation with a friend or stranger.
Self love isn’t a state of being but an exercise practiced daily. This internal monologue is one you’re in complete control of every moment. In fact, you’ll notice more self love will trickle into your relationships with others. You’ll notice more patience, kindness, and respect in all aspects of your life. When you have a loving and respectful relationship with yourself, everything else seems to fall into place.
