Self-Care Over the Holidays

Self-care can be tricky to come by during the holidays. Be intentional about adding in extra self love throughout the day. It’s okay if you need it.

1. Do an Oil Hair Mask

Oil hair masks are an easy addition to your evening wind-down. Use an oil rich in fatty acids to moisturize and restore your hair. The lauric acid found in coconut oil can penetrate the shaft of the hair-use it for moisture and repair. Olive oil strengthens while Jojoba can add shine. Start with a dime sized amount and rake through the end of the hair. Let sit and wash out with your normal hair care ritual.

2. Check on your finances

Holiday purchasing and events unchecked can cause stress and anxiety. Check on your finances and make a list of any purchases still left to be made. Budget accordingly to take back control. If you have a surplus this year decide if you’d like to give to charity or if it’s better to save it. It feels good to do for others, just remember your financial well-being is a part of your total well-being.

3. Go for a drive

Hop in the car and drive around your neighborhood post-sunset. Admire the lights and the aesthetic of the holiday. Let the joy and wonder take over. Pro-tip, bring hot chocolate and play festive music.

4. 5 Minute Meditation with Diaphragmatic Breathing

Breathing into your diaphragm can reduce stress and encourage calm throughout the body. To breathe into the diaphragm find a comfortable position either sitting or lying down. Place one hand on your abdominals and the other on your heart. Inhale through your nose for a slow count of 4. Feel the abdomen expand. Hold your breath for a slow count of 2. Then, steadily exhale through a relaxed mouth for a controlled count of 6. Continue until you feel the body relax. Use this breathing tool whenever you need.

5. Dry Brush

The winter time can wreak havoc on our skin. Constantly shifting from artificially heated rooms to the harsh cold weather outside leaves the microbiome devastated. Add in dry brushing before you go to bed to help encourage the parasympathetic nervous system and rev up your lymphatic system. Pro-tip: follow with the body regimen for total winter skincare bliss.

The holidays can be a whirlwind time of festivities, joy, and unbridled chaos. Take time for you during this busy season. Stick to your routines and carve out time to gift yourself TLC. Use any of these tips as you see fit or head to class to practice serious self care.
